Wearing jeans used to be a simple business in the past. Jeans all looked pretty similar. You put them on, and didn’t give them a second thought. Today, there are so many different styles of jeans available that the dos and don’ts of wearing them can be confusing. For this reason I have compiled a guide for you to peruse, should you want to delve deeper into jeans wearing etiquette and style.
Skinny Jeans

Do wear these if you are tall and slim. They will flatter your figure and show off your long legs to perfection.
If you have wider hips and larger thighs, you can still wear skinny jeans, but they will look best with a long sweater, a sweater dress or a smock top.
Don’t wear skinny jeans if you are plus sized. If you do, they will show any lumps and bumps and emphasize your size.
Low Rise
Do wear low rise jeans if you are slim with a flat, toned stomach area.
Don’t wear them if you have a stomach which peeps out over the top of the waistband, as this is unattractive.
It is also best not to wear them with your underwear showing, and to check when purchasing them that when you bend over, you are not revealing bottom cleavage.
These are just too sexy and revealing to ever be worn on a casual Friday at work. Save them for time outside the office.
Hipsters
Do wear this style of jeans if you wish to make your bottom appear to be smaller. As the top band begins part way down the bottom, it will create the illusion of your bottom beginning lower down also.
Don’t wear hipsters if you have a long body, as they will make it appear even longer.
As with low rise jeans, they are best not worn by those who have a stomach which falls over the band at the top.
Regular Fit
Most people look fine in regular jeans, but they look best on those who are an average weight and build.
Do wear them at relaxed family gatherings, and nights in with friends.
For a date where you want to look ‘hot,’ these jeans don’t really fit the bill.
Boot-cut

Do wear boot cut jeans if you have either a pear shaped, or hour glass figure. The slightly wider end of their legs will balance out your figure and produce a flattering effect.
Boot-cut jeans are best not worn if you are very slim, as the material will swamp your figure.
Flares

Flares look great on tall people. They also are the style of jeans to wear to celebrate the 1970’s when this style was all the rage.
Don’t wear flares if you intend to tuck the bottoms of the legs into your boots, there is far too much material.
They are best avoided in very wet weather as they will soak up the rain and slap about your ankles with wild abandon.
If you have short legs it is best to give flares a miss, as the width at the bottom of the legs will make you appear shorter than you actually are.
Tips
With all jeans you need to make sure that they fit you correctly, both so that they look great on you, and so that they feel good to wear.
Jeans which are too small, or short in the body, will rise into crevices, causing discomfort and a ‘camel’ appearance to observers.
Jeans which are too long are fine if you intend to wear them with high boots, as they will make your legs appear longer when worn this way. However, jeans which are too long worn with flat shoes, will drag on the ground and get filthy and frayed.
Jeans with detailing such as embroidery, are best worn with embellishments towards the bottom half of the leg, if you don’t want attention drawn to large hips and thighs.
If you want to make your bottom appear smaller avoid back pockets. If you want your bottom to look bigger wear great big back pockets.
When trying to appear slimmer avoid jeans which button up. Get flatter jeans that zip up instead.
White jeans will emphasize size and shape, whereas dark blue jeans and jet black ones will make the wearer appear slimmer.
High waisted jeans are out of fashion at the moment and are less comfortable than most other jeans and so are best avoided completely.
